1) I agree with you totally.  The Dr. King Memorial should be designed / sculptored in an image from the souls of black folks.

2) The Memorial Foundation has made a grave error.  I hope that it will withdraw its selection of Lei Yixin and present the Memorial project to an artist who is worthy of it.  An artist who collaborates with tyranny, despite his skills, should not be given this honor.  This is not just.

Yours very truly,

J. Stassi

3) Gilbert:

The official announcement that Lei Yixin would be the sculptor of the ML King Memorial came on 15 February 2007.  But here is an article published 2 months earlier that reports that it was a done deal even then!

According to this article, the Memorial Foundation had been searching for 2 years without success for a sculptor!

The idea that such an honor is assigned to someone that turns up not in an exhaustive search but strictly by chance blows my mind!

4) Gilbert,

My brother you are not alone.  The real problem as you have discovered is not Don Imus or Russ Limbargh or the KKK---the problem is us.

I have been fighting this same battle for 40 years in the streets, courthouses, radio, television and in print.  I was so vocal my own people ran me off the airwaves (see attachment).  You have a lot of frauds in black media who are playing both sides of the fence.  I use to end my radio talk shows with "Every black face I see is not my brother and every white face I see is not my enemy."  It is an uphill battle my brother.  Willie Lynch is alive and well in Black America.  God bless and please keep me in prayer as I will you.

6) That will be very nice if an African American were the artist.  We, as a people need to show more of our gifts and talents so that the world will know that we have a share, and it's important and significant.

Have the person who is named to do the art work been finalized yet, or is it still time to turn it around, and who would you contact to do so?

8) Sir: Dr. King is a national/international human rights hero, right along with Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Tubman - at lest in my eyes. I'm insulted that the contract to sculpt the memorial statue of this great man has been "outsourced" to China alongside our jobs, etc. It should be done in America with American stone and by our own American artist.

I am a 68 year old white American woman who thanks you for speaking out.

Mrs. F. Ritter

I am with you 100%. The thought that the memorial for a man, who has done so much for civil rights in america, may be built in the most oppressive nation in the world is pure insanity.

I definately think that it should be built by an African AMERICAN artist. Furthermore the statue they showed on CNN actually made Dr King look half chinese. Add my name to your petition. Good luck with your cause.

S. Walton

PS We have plenty of good granite right here in Montana If you change their minds

9) Sir,

I am a white American and I am a student in the fine art department at the University of Montana.  I am outraged that a monument to Dr. King is being done in China, of Chinese granite.  I am a 46 year old woman that was raised on the words of equality and Dr. King was a major influence in our household.  I have watched over the years as American jobs have been outsourced and I have suffered from the competition of cheap foreign labor myself.  I have always been socially and politically active, but my frustration at the lack of concern forced me to  put it down to changing times and world views, but this is too much to tolerate.  Dr. King was a great man whose self-sacrifice and immeasurable courage has been an inspiration to us all.  His impact on the United States and the betterment of our society is without equal in our times.  As an American I am so outraged that this piece would be outsourced to China, one of the world's worst offenders of basic human rights and in direct opposition of Dr. King's views.  As an artist I am completely enraged that this work is being done in China, of Chinese granite.  There are so many sources of fine stone in this nation, and many talented artists that would be proud to do this work.  This piece should be done by an American artist, preferably an African-American artist, of American stone, not outsourced to one of the most oppressive regimes in the world today.  I would like to know who is responsible for this insult to Dr. King's legacy, American stone masons, African-Americans and American artists.  I would like to voice my opinion to those responsible and throw my support to those who are opposed to such an insulting action.  Is this something I should discuss with my congressmen, or is there another government agency?  Please, tell me what I can do to help correct this travesty.

Respectfully yours,

M. Lawson

10) Even as a 70 year old Caucasian male who was never directly involved in the civil rights movement, I was appalled to hear what I did on CNN yesterday regarding the MLK Memorial.

This is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!

Who made this decision?  Who is this Roma Group?  Where is the outrage amongst the Black community and its leaders?  This has to be stopped.  Somehow, someone has to bring what is happening to the attention of all of America through the use of every media outlet possible.

What about internet petitions?  What about organized protests?   Can someone please "step up to the plate" and "do something"?

A Chinese artist and Chinese stone.  The unbelievable idiocy of it is hard to comprehend.

I'm an old man with little "power," living on Social Security in Mexico, but you have my full support in your efforts to "make this right."  Thank you for bringing this to the attention of the American people.

Respectfully,

T. Robinson
